The Witch of Blackbird Pond-Main Events, Conflicts and Resolutions
The main character, Kit Tyler, moves from Barbados to Connecticut to live with
her aunt when her grandfather dies (her parents are already dead). When she gets
there she finds that life is a lot harder than the luxury she enjoyed in Barbados.
Her relatives aren’t ecstatic to have her move in with them and her cousin Judith is
jealous of her. She struggles to do chores and sit through church meeting. She also
keeps making mistakes.
Life gets a little better. She meets William Ashby, a wealthy man who starts courting
her, and Hannah Tupper, an old widow who lives near Blackbird Pond and gives
great advice. Kit even teaches a young girl, Prudence, how to read and write when
her parents won’t let her go to school. Kit’s cousin, Judith, is courted by John
Holbrook, so she’s not jealous of Kit any more. One day Kit feels almost like she did
in Barbados while thatching the roof of Hannah’s house with the sailor Nathaniel
Eaton.
Then disaster strikes: John must go to join the militia and fight against Native
Americans and a strange sickness spreads through the town. Judith and Kit
fall ill but get better quickly. However, Mercy falls seriously ill and almost dies.
The townspeople while looking for someone to blame point fingers at Hannah,
the “witch” of Blackbird Pond. Luckily Kit runs to Hannah’s house and has Nat bring
her up the river before the angry mob kills Hannah. Since the townspeople could
not find Hannah, they point fingers at Kit and say the witch passed her powers down
to Kit. She is locked up then put to trial.
Luckily Nat comes and brings Prudence who testifies for Kit. The townspeople end
up saying oopsie daisy, guess we got a bit carried away. John comes back and says
he actually wants to marry Mercy, which is okay because William would rather
marry Judith than Kit. Just when it seems everyone is going to live happily ever
after but Kit, Nat comes back with a ship of his own and asks her if she wants to
marry him.
