The Witch of Blackbird Pond-Setting
The book takes place in Wethersfield, Connecticut in 1687. The society is Puritan and stiffly proper. America is still part of England so there is a lot of tension between Royalists and people who want to defend the Connecticut charter.
Most of the book takes place specifically in Kit’s uncle’s house. It’s a nice house with a kitchen, a parlor, and a few bedrooms. It is, however, full of places and things to be swept, dusted, and scrubbed.
Another place where Kit spends a lot of time is Hannah Tupper’s house. The house is really just a one room shack but there is always a fire in the fireplace and a welcoming feeling.
Only five years after the book takes place the Salem witch trial occurred. Nineteen men and women were convicted of witchcraft and hanged. During those days people often blamed things on witches since there was no better explanation. To learn more about the trials you can go to law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/salem/SALEM.HTM

A house very much like the one Kit lived in.
