The Witch of Blackbird Pond-Characters
Kit Tyler – Kit is a young lady who moved from Barbados to Wethersfield, Connecticut when her rich grandfather died. The spoiled girl has to get used to working hard, spending hour after hour in church, and never getting much of a break. In the Puritan society she is eccentric and improper but she finds solace with the Widow Tupper.
Hannah Tupper – The widow lives in a small house, almost a shack, by Blackbird Pond. Since she is Quaker she is never accepted by the general community and is sometimes called the witch of Blackbird Pond. However as Kit gets to know Hannah we find out that the widow is really good-natured and wise.
Judith Wood – Judith is Kit’s cousin, at first she is slightly jealous of Kit but eventually Judith warms to her. She is slightly shallow (she cares too much about clothes, wealth, and who she’ll marry). She and Kit become almost like sisters.
Mercy Wood – Judith’s sister and Kit’s other cousin is Mercy. Although she is crippled and must use crutches to get around, Mercy is kind and always puts others before herself.
Nathaniel Eaton – Nat is the son of the captain whose ship Kit sails on from Barbados to Connecticut. Nat has a kind way of teasing Kit about her odd qualities and by the end of the book the two fall in love and plan to get married.
